Astrophotography Workshop
— Milky Way & Star Trail Photography
A small-group, hands-on astrophotography workshop focused on understanding the night sky, mastering your camera in darkness, and creating meaningful images. Most importantly, it’s guided with patience, generosity, and deep respect for nature.
WHY THIS WORKSHOP EXISTS
It’s about slowing down, understanding the night sky, and learning how to work with darkness rather than fighting it.
For this reason, this workshop exists because too many night photography courses rush people through settings, hold back knowledge, or focus on results instead of experience. That’s not how we teach.
• We explain why things work, not just what to set on your camera.
• If something doesn’t click straight away, we stay with you until it does.
There’s no script, no pressure to “keep up”, and no secrets held back.
We actively teach responsible night photography. Respecting the land, minimising impact, and following Leave No Trace principles.
We choose locations carefully, support local communities where we can, and encourage photographers to build a deeper connection with nature rather than just collecting images.
• Want to truly understand astrophotography, not just copy settings
• Value thoughtful teaching and personal guidance
• Care about nature, place, and the experience of being out at night
• Are happy to spend time learning, experimenting, and refining their craft
If you’re looking for fast results, big groups, or a rushed checklist-style course, this probably isn’t the right fit, and that’s okay.

This workshop is designed to help you understand astrophotography, not memorise settings.
Everything is taught on location, in real conditions, with time to ask questions and refine your approach.
A Clear, Practical Approach to Astrophotography — Explained in the Field

In this workshop, you’ll learn how to plan, shoot, and refine Milky Way and star trail images in real night conditions.
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
When and where to photograph the Milky Way and star trails
How moon phases, seasons, and sky orientation affect your images
Choosing locations with strong natural foregrounds and minimal light pollution
Understanding ISO, aperture, shutter speed, and white balance for astrophotography
How to balance exposure without blowing highlights or introducing unnecessary noise
Choosing the right camera mode for different night sky scenes
Focusing accurately in complete darkness for crisp, sharp stars
Using the 500 rule (and when to go beyond it) to avoid star motion blur
Creating balanced compositions that connect sky and landscape
Camera settings for clean, colourful star trails
Composition tips for circular and linear trails
Where and how to focus for maximum sharpness and consistency
Reading the landscape at night
Creating images that feel calm, balanced, and considered
Developing confidence so you can apply these skills on your own
Understanding when noise reduction helps — and when it harms detail
Capturing clean files that give you flexibility in editing
Simple workflow advice to improve results without overprocessing
Astrophotography can feel intimidating at first — darkness, unfamiliar settings, changing conditions.
This workshop is designed to feel slow, supportive, and intentional, so you can focus on learning and creating, not rushing.
A Calm, Guided Experience Under the Stars
What the Experience Is Like on the Night
HOW THE NIGHT UNFOLDS
This gives you time to:
• Set up your gear without pressure
• Get familiar with the surroundings
• Ask initial questions
• Understand how the night will flow
We begin with a short briefing on safety, conditions, and the plan for the evening.
• Camera setup and basic night-ready settings
• How to work comfortably in the dark
• How to approach composition once the sky appears
Nothing is rushed.
We explain why settings matter, not just what to dial in.
• Milky Way photography when conditions allow
• Star trail techniques as the night progresses
• One-on-one guidance while you shoot
• Time to experiment, refine, and ask questions
You’re never left guessing. Instructors are nearby, watching setups and helping you adjust.
• Review what worked and why
• Answer final questions
• Talk through next steps you can apply on your own
• You leave with knowledge you understand, not just images you captured.
Clouds, wind, and sky clarity are part of astrophotography, and part of the learning.
We teach you how to:
• Adapt your approach when conditions change
• Make creative decisions instead of giving up
• Use what the night offers rather than fighting it
• This is where confidence really builds.
• No pressure to “keep up”
• All experience levels welcome
• Questions encouraged at every stage
• Many participants arrive unsure, and leave feeling capable, calm, and inspired to shoot independently.

• A camera with manual mode
• A tripod
• A wide-angle lens (recommended, not mandatory)
• A remote shutter release
• Extra batteries
• Empty memory card
If you’re missing equipment, we can often provide loan lenses, tripods, remotes, or filters, depending on availability and camera compatibility. We always recommend to work with what you have.
If you are considering buying a camera or are completely new, this workshop is a great way to understand what equipment suits astrophotography before investing. Please contact us in advance so we can arrange suitable gear where possible.
Your camera should be capable of shooting at ISO 1600 or 6400 to capture the Milky Way and stars clearly.
